Pediatric Occupational Therapy

People often wonder why a child would benefit from Occupational Therapy, thinking an occupational therapist assists individuals with finding a job or improving their occupation. Occupational Therapists are trained to assist individuals with performing all of the daily tasks that allow them to be independent. The daily tasks of a child include self care, play and learning. The outcome of these tasks is to develop the skills for lifelong learning and to be productive, independent members of their community. These skills include:

  • Body Awareness, timing and motor skills to participate in activities of play.

  • Fine motor coordination to master handwriting, self care and use of functional tools.

  • Age appropriate self care activities

  • Regulation of arousal level to participate in daily activities

  • Refinement of sensory discrimination and processing

  • Development of ocular motor and vestibular skills to improve reading, motor skills and classroom participation.

  • Oral motor skills and tolerance to eat a variety of tastes and textures.

·     Pediatric Occupational Therapists typically use the modality of play as a method of achieving therapy goals. Play is highly motivating and meaningful for children. It provides a mechanism for carryover of skills as the child will use the skill again when interacting with other children. The therapy room and innovative equipment at Capital Kids Occupational Therapy is designed to mirror playful activities for the child. In reality, the therapists are drawing upon their training and skills to provide challenging therapeutic activities aimed at developing greater capabilities and skill levels.

Education and involvement of the family in treatment is critical to achieving success.
